Shearing

To maintain comfort and good health the sheep and goats must be sheared. We domesticated sheep more than 10,000 years ago, and bred them to have thick wooly coats that must be sheared. Shearing takes less than 3-8 minutes and then the sheep and goats head to the field to relish their new haircuts. They don’t seem to recognize each other after shearing and have to get reaquainted. The lambs don’t recognize their moms and need to hear and smell them before everyone gets sorted out. But it happens quickly and they enjoy a good romp after losing pounds of fleece.

This is Charlotte’s first shearing. She is calm and quiet under the shearer’s sure gentle hands.
