Skirting and Processing Fiber

After shearing, each fleece is skirted which means each is inspected and the big pieces of vegetable matter such as straw, hay, and burrs are removed along with fiber that contains urine or feces.

Once skirted, the fleeces are sent to a fiber mill where they are scoured (washed), picked (locks are pulled apart), carded (combed and fibers aligned on a drums), and formed into batts.
